  • First to market

Led first-to-market retail and ecommerce initiatives, building new propositions and routes to market recognised through multiple industry awards.

  • Go to market

Built and led procurement and commercial teams, taking products from sourcing and proposition development through to market across South Africa's major retailers.

  • Community

When leaders call Grant

Most calls come at a point of growth, pressure or change, when the way the leader operates has become the constraint on the business.

The business has outgrown the founder

Growth has turned the founder into the bottleneck. Decisions queue at one desk, and the team waits instead of leading.

The senior team is overloaded

Priorities compete, meetings multiply and the leadership team is busy without moving the business forward.

A decision with lasting consequences

A restructure, a new market or a key appointment, where the leader wants an independent, experienced view before committing.

The role has changed faster than the leader

A first CEO appointment, a larger organisation or a new stage of scale that asks for a different kind of leadership.

Grant's preferred client

High-growth businesses, and businesses with ambitious growth plans that need experienced leadership, commercial discipline and access to the right networks.

Founder-led businesses

Founders ready to move from running everything themselves to leading a business that can grow beyond them.

Investor-backed scale-ups

Private equity and investor-backed businesses where growth is expected and the leadership team is accountable for delivering it.

National retail chains

Multi-site retail operations where execution, people and operating rhythm decide the result.

Global FMCG brands

Global brands navigating scale and complexity that benefit from an experienced operator's perspective on leadership, commercial performance and execution.

What coaching with Grant covers

The leader grows, and that growth shows up in the business. The work runs across five connected areas.

Clarity and direction

Defining what the leader wants to achieve, what matters most now and where they are taking the business.

Leadership effectiveness

Leading people, building trust, delegating, communicating clearly and creating a high-performing leadership team.

Strategic thinking and decisions

Stepping back from daily pressure to test assumptions, find the real constraints and decide with better judgement.

Execution and accountability

Turning priorities into clear actions, building momentum and making sure commitments become measurable progress.

Personal growth and performance

Self-awareness, confidence, resilience and the habits a leader needs to carry the demands of growth.

Businesses do not need more ideas: they need movement.

About Grant

Grant is a global executive coach, mentor and fractional CEO and COO, based in Cape Town. He works with founders, CEOs and senior leadership teams to lead more effectively and build businesses that can scale.

Before Gralen, Grant was a founding executive at Takealot. He has held C-suite leadership roles at Toy Kingdom, weFix and Van Schaik, and has worked across retail, ecommerce, FMCG and tech businesses, including being part of the Massmart team at both store and head-office level. That breadth of operating experience is what sets his coaching apart: he knows the job from the inside.

In 2014, he founded Gralen Consulting to work with founders and leadership teams through growth, turnaround and scale. Today he coaches and mentors leaders globally, and steps in as fractional CEO or COO when a business needs experienced executive leadership and accountability for delivery.

Grant also builds the infrastructure around fractional leadership in South Africa. He is the founder of Fractionation, which places experienced fractional C-suite executives into businesses, and the founder of Fractionals SA, the country's only fractional executive community.

Grant is also co-founder and CEO of Ghost, a build-for-impact platform for fractional executives, consultants and business owners. Ghost builds and operates the infrastructure behind their businesses, from websites and CRM to brand systems, market intelligence and go-to-market, allowing them to focus on the work where they create the most value.

You don't just get Grant. You get his network.

Most advisers bring their own experience. Grant brings his, plus access to hundreds of C-suite executives through the organisations he has built. Where his own expertise ends, his network begins, and he knows who to bring in.

What that means for your business

The right skill at the right time

Finance, technology, marketing, people or sales: when capability is missing, Grant can bring in the right executive, for as long as it is needed.

One relationship, a bench of experience

You deal with Grant. Behind him sit the community he built and the placement network he runs, so finding senior talent never starts from scratch.

Leadership for the stage you are in

Fractional executives join for the period and purpose the business needs, and build capability inside the team while they are there.

How an engagement works

Every engagement is shaped around the leader, the business and its objectives. There is no off-the-shelf programme.

  1. A first conversation

The leader sets out the situation and the outcome they are after. Grant is candid about whether coaching, mentoring or a fractional role will help most.

  2. Agree the role and the outcomes

Before the work starts, both sides agree which role Grant is playing, what success looks like and the rhythm of the sessions.

  3. Work in a steady rhythm

Sessions combine reflection, challenge and practical action, with commitments carried from one session to the next.

  4. Leave capability behind

The aim is a leader and a team who operate better without him, with the capability built during the engagement staying in the business.

Governance, community and network

Board experience, executive communities and trusted business relationships built over more than two decades.

Questions leaders ask

Straight answers to what founders and CEOs usually want to know before a first conversation.

Who is Grant's coaching for?

Founders, CEOs, executives and business owners carrying significant responsibility through growth, change, scale or transition. They want more than advice: challenge, perspective, accountability and practical experience from a partner who has operated at the same level, so they can think clearly, decide well and execute with greater impact.

Where does Grant coach leaders across the globe?

Grant works from Cape Town and coaches senior leaders across South Africa, the UK, Europe, the US, Asia and Africa. Sessions run in person or virtually, depending on where the leader is based and what the situation needs. Location never limits who he works with.

What happens in the first coaching session?

The first conversation gets straight to the issues that matter. Grant takes the time to understand the business, the leadership challenge and what you want to achieve, then tests your assumptions and identifies where the biggest opportunities or constraints sit. Together you define what the relationship must deliver. There is no generic programme and no prescribed playbook.

What is the typical engagement length?

Anything from a couple of hours to a couple of days a month, depending on whether Grant is coaching, mentoring or holding a fractional role. Coaching sessions run weekly, fortnightly or monthly, and engagements typically last for months, with some continuing for years as the business grows.

What does a typical engagement cost?

Engagements are retainer-based. The length and the investment vary, because every engagement is tailored to the client and what the business needs, so there is no standard published price. Grant sets out the options and the fee after a first conversation, once he understands the situation.

Are coaching conversations confidential?

Yes. What a leader discusses in coaching stays between them and Grant, and current engagements are not named without the client's agreement. That confidentiality is the standard founders, CEOs and boards expect at this level, and it is what allows the hard conversations to happen.

What does Grant expect from the leader?

Commitment to the work between sessions. Coaching creates value through reflection, challenge, practical action and accountability, and the last two depend on the leader. Grant asks hard questions and holds the leader to what they commit to, while every decision stays theirs.

Can Grant work with my existing leadership team or board?

Yes. Grant works directly with a founder or CEO, alongside an existing leadership team, or as a partner to the board. Where the business needs more than coaching, he can bring hands-on fractional executive capability and draw on his network of experienced operators: one trusted relationship that extends to the wider business when the situation demands it.

How is fractional leadership different from consulting?

A consultant diagnoses the problem and recommends a solution. A fractional executive sits inside the leadership team, leads people and is accountable for delivering the result. Grant has done both, and is clear from the start which one a business is getting, so expectations are set before the work begins.
